Description:
In 1999, the last manually operated New York City substation was shut down. The mammoth machines that had powered the New York City subway system for more than a century were dismantled and sold as scrap. Fortunately, in 1997 photographer Christopher Payne caught wind of the plan and managed to gain unlimited access to these formerly off limits buildings. Featuring stunning photography, informative drawings, and engaging text, New York's Forgotten Substations brings this lost chapter in New York City history life, creating a fitting memorial to its industrial past.
