This eleventh volume in the fantastic Cinema One series features interviews with film director Pier Paolo Pasolini recorded in Rome in 1968 and edited to move chronologically through his films up to Teorema released in the same year. The interviews cover a broad range of subjects, including Pasolini’s upbringing, Italian marxism, communism, catholicism, and Italian peasantry. Pasolini reflects on his prior works, including a very interesting reappraisal of his film The Gospel according to Saint Matthew. He also expands on his theoretical ideas about the difference between a cinema of prose and one of poetry. This fascinating book makes a good bookend to a later less optimistic interview (Pasolini promisso nostro) recorded while he was filming Salo, but released after his murder in 1975.
