Description:
Salvador Dali’s legendary Dream of Venus pavilion at the 1939 World’s Fair in Queens, New York offered fairgoers a memorable first encounter with surrealism. Visitors entered through a set of women’s legs and bought tickets inside a giant fish head before moving through an increasingly bizarre landscape of kaleidoscopic sights, sounds, and images. One of the first multimedia art installations, the exhibit included an underwater living room, pools of topless swimming mermaids, people dressed as lobsters, and four enormous murals painted by Dali. Featuring rarely seen behind the scenes construction photos and incredible full color shots of the completed pavilion, Dali’s Dream of Venus brings this once-in-a-lifetime work of art to life. A dream come true for production designers, art directors, and costume designers.
