Description:
One of the most influential books in the history of early modernism and urban design, Tony Garnier’s Une Cite Industrielle ( An Industrial City) is a socialist urban utopia with buildings for industry, transportation, athletics, housing, and government. Designed while still a Rome Prize student, Garnier’s complete plan was first exhibited in Paris in 1904 and then published to great acclaim in 1917. It was an immediate influence on Le Corbusier who expressed his admiration in a 1919 letter to Garnier that is reprinted on the back of the book jacket: “….in ten years, it is this book that will be the base of architectural production and it will be recognized as the turning point.” Out of print and hard to find, this first edition hardcover facsimile of the 1917 book includes an oversized plan of Une Cite Industrielle.
